ASL Assistive Tech App

In my 21st Century Technological Skills Class, I did a project required us to design an app that would serve individuals with accessibility needs. I thought about designing an app that would translate American Sign Language and can translate it to an audible speech for people who cannot read sign language. The purpose of this app is to eliminate speech barriers between those who cannot read ASL and those who are either deaf or mute. I think a learning problem that it is targeting are those who does not understand American Sign Language or maybe would like to learn it. I think that if this app was effective and accurate it would teach others ASL faster. It’s proven that people who watch movies/shows in a foreign language (with captions) will find it much easier to learn the language alongside of studying it.

The Functionalities of the App

The functionalities of this app is that the phone’s camera will have to face both hands of the signer and it will read the gestures and symbols. It will then translate immediately into an audible speech for the other person to hear. The person will both hear and see the ASL speaker so they can get the hang of understanding the language. The speaker will have be able to quickly and easily communicate to others. The speech can be translated into any language such as English, Spanish, Japanese, Filipino, Chinese, French, and many more.
